TICKS

Whilst we are lucky not to have the Paralysis Tick here in Weipa, we do have the common Bush and Dog Ticks which breed in the dirt and leaf matter commonly found in this area.

These ticks are cyclic and, if untreated, can cause severe illness, infection and death.

There are preventative measures you can take.

1.  Keep your pets protected with Panoramis chewable tablets.  These are the MOST EFFECTIVE product on the market and available at the Vet or Muddy Mutts.  Although they don't advertise as a tick preventative and they are reasonably expensive, our carers swear by them and use them on all of their family pets with 100% success rate.  Some of their pets, after being on holidays, had millions of bush ticks with secondary infections occuring and after a tablet were completely irradicated within 36hrs.

Protect Your Dog from Parasites with Panoramis® (spinosad + milbemycin oxime)

They creep, jump, bite and suck blood. The enemy? Parasites. And they are a threat to your dog's health.

Panoramis is a monthly chewable tablet for dogs that:

  • Treats, prevents and controls fleas

  • Controls flea allergy dermatitis

  • Prevents heartworm disease

  • Treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm & whipworm infections.

Panoramis combines two trusted active ingredients to provide protection for your dog.

And, because Panoramis is a tasty chewable tablet, it won't rub or wash off.

2.  Use LIME on your yard and hose in.  This changes the acidic PH levels in the soil and kills off eggs.

3.  Spray your garden edges, poles, brackets, and facures with Pigeon's Industrial Insecticide (available at Produce Stores in Cairns) or contact Weipa Pest Control.  This is an industrial strength pesticide, highly poisonous, and very effective to irradicate pests such as ants, cockroaches, spiders, ticks, fleas and lice.

LICE, MITES and FLEAS

Almost every animal that comes into care from the wild will have some sort of lice or mite infestation.  It is vitally important that wild birds are quarantied from other animals in the carers house to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination and reinfestation.

If the animal is strong enough in health to endure a bath then do this at the earliest opportunity using clean towels and FIDO's Shampoo with a FIDO's Concentrate spray.  Read the directions on the bottle to make up the correct dilation as some animals have very sensitive skin and if the animals has had lice for some time there will likely be secondary infections and skin irritations.

Be sure not wash the towels thoroughly and disinfect ALL areas.  Repeat this process every few days to a week until the cycle has been broken and irradication of the pest has occurred.

Be sure not spray the concentrate (at correct dillation) in all of the animal's housing and bedding to prevent reinfestation.

Check your house, especially around eaves, porches, foundations, wall cavilities and other gaps to ensure no nests or live insects breeding there.
